What is Project 1?

Project 1 is a seasonal paste-up gallery that will showcase local artist’s work in a dedicated community entertainment space in Wangaratta’s CBD. In addition, a paste-up mural will be used to decorate the lane, adding to the vibrant atmosphere. It will be an activated art space that will be enjoyed by the community and visitors, and will be another step towards making Wangaratta an attractive destination and place of local pride. This will be the first project of its kind in rural Victoria, bringing together local business, not-for-profit, and council in a community-focused project.

Who’s Idea Is This?

Project 1 is a community-led laneway activation project by Wang Laneways Inc., a not-for-profit founded by a passionate team of Wangaratta locals looking to transform spaces throughout the North East.

Any local (residing within 50km of postcode 3677 as determined by this tool) is able to submit artwork for the gallery. Artists outside of this area will be rejected. No refunds will be given if you are rejected.

Each gallery session will feature 8 artists’ submissions. The gallery will be rotated with each season (Summer, Autumn, Winter, Spring) with new artwork featured for each.

As many as you like! Each one will be treated as individual and will incur the submission fee.

Entry for submissions is $10. This is non-refundable and must be paid online via credit or debit card during the application process.

Should your submission be successful, Wang Laneways Inc. will be responsible for any costs associated with exhibiting your work.

No. Entry is free!

In basic terms, it’s a “temporary” gallery which features artwork printed on paper and glued to a wall.

We are part of Wang Laneways Inc. We are a private, not-for-profit organisation that has received funding from the Rural City of Wangaratta and private investors to launch our pilot project - Project 1. We have business model which aims to make the organisation independent and sustainable.

Yes, in a couple of ways:

  • Successful artists will be encouraged to sell their original artwork and copies at the Grand Opening event. We will provide 10 high-resolution copies (which the artist must autograph) which can be sold by artists for an amount that they decide. Wang Laneways Inc. will take a 20% commission for sales, plus print fees.
  • Then, with your permission, Wang Laneways Inc. will continue selling your digitised submission via our online marketplace at a cost determined by us. You will receive a commission of 20% on any sales.

Unfortunately we can only choose 8, so yours may not be one of them. You will be added to a contact list and will be notified when the next seasonal event is open for submissions.

Go to the submission page and fill out the form. You will then be sent an email with further information and instructions.
